Help Set the Record Straight on the Waimea Trails & Greenway
The Waimea Trails and Greenways project is a planned 5 mile stream side trail through the heart of Waimea. Through a series of community work days, there is now a 1 mile section open for use and the community has been coming out to enjoy the trail. A new Walking School Bus has started that helps children from public housing walk to school safely along the trail. Professionals use the trail to ride their bike to work or go for a run during lunch time. Families are walking dogs together and children are discovering the wonders of the Waikoloa Stream banks. This trail is a wonderful template for trails in other Big Island communities.
Over the past year, the project has gone through an Environmental Assessment to become eligible for federal funds to complete the entire 5 mile section. However, recent effort to stop the trail by a few people have unfortunately sent the wrong message to decision makers in Honolulu over the community’s desire for this trail, even though the Waimea community has been advocating for this trail for the last 16 years.
You can help to set the record straight.
Please send an email to Pat Phung at: pat.phung expressing your support for the Waimea Trail and Greenway project.
Once the trail project is approved, there will be a meeting to go over the design details of the trail. That will be the appropriate time to discuss things like preserving trees, costs for bridges and options to pave or leave the trail natural surface. Your support is critically needed to ensure we can move forward on this important project.

Complete Streets Passes Unaminously
Wow, thank you, PATH members! The Hawaii County Complete Streets Resolution passed unamiously on Wednesday, October 19th. Read it here.

Let DLNR Know We Value State Trails – In Person this Weekend, or Send an Email
The Senate Committee on Water, Land and Housing is hosting a series of Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) "listening sessions" with DLNR Chair William Aila, this weekend starting Friday evening in Hilo and Saturday in Waimea and Kona. This is a great opportunity to share your thoughts about our state trail system, Na Ala Hele, and express support for the preservation of ancient and historic trails as well as the need to establish new publicly accessible trails.

Dear, Chairman Aila -
I am a member of PATH and I support the DLNR’s preservation of ancient and historic as well as the establishment of new trails on Hawaii Island. Too many of our beloved trails have been destroyed or closed in recent years, at a great price to environmental sustainability, cultural understanding and quality of life.
We urge the DLNR to take swift action to provide the State Historic Preservation Division with the resources it needs to fully meet its obligations under the National Historic Preservation Act. We are aware Hawaii is in the middle of a two-year probationary period and we feel this is a critical wake-up call for all of us.
We also need a full inventory of ancient and historic trails prior
to 1892 so we may be more aware of these corridors and work together, both public and private sector stakeholders, to preserve them where possible or mitigate destruction with meaningful plans that establish a similar path of travel the trails once provided.
Finally, we strongly support responsible public access to trails and urge the DLNR to establish a hiking license program, similar to the hunting license program currently in place. Such a program can become a building block to responsible public access to our state trail system.
